FAQ

  • Do you work with clients that don't have hair loss?

YES! Hair cutting is my creative outlet and I LOVE cutting all hair into shapes that work for each individual client. I LOVE cutting short hair, it is my sweet spot, and I could do scissor over comb, disconnected, asymetric, classic and edgy shapes for hours!

I work with thick hair, thin hair, no hair (wigs etc).

  • Do you specialize?

When I was coming up as a hair dresser, it was common to specialize. I worked in a salon where hair cutters shared clients with colorists, and the collaboration was an exciting way to create. I am a trained hair cutting specialist, with loads of advanced training from renowned salon establishments such as The Vidal Sassoon Academy, Bumble and Bumble University, and Davines. Most of my clients know that I am a compulsive class taker and love to try new things on anyone who will let me!

  • Do you do color and chemical services?

I don’t. When Moxie Parlour was a larger salon with more chairs, I had colorists to collaborate with right next to me. Now that I am a one chair salon, I outsource color to my many brilliant colorist colleagues. Depending on the kind of color you are seeking, I have referrals for all! Just ask me for a referral!

  • What should I expect when I come for a haircut?

We will have had a brief consultation on Zoom prior to your appointment- but there is always time to collaborate on ideas before we get started. The service includes a wash/condition, a haircut, and drying. I do a lot of my finishing work on dry hair, so when I take out the blow-dryer…we are only halfway done!

I usually book about an hour with haircut clients. If you require additional time for drying, styling, or extras please let me know when we are booking the appointment so that I can accommodate you.

  • What is your fee? What if I need to cancel?

My Services start at $165 for all appointments. The only reason it may exceed $165 is if we have agreed on extending the time of your appointment due to lots of hair, or extra styling or treatment services.

If you need to cancel your appointment, I ask for at least 48 hours notice or a full haircut fee will be charged.

  • What are the salon COVID restrictions?

I do not require clients to wear a mask at this time. If you are feeling sick, have symptoms or have been exposed to someone with the flu or covid, I may ask you to wear a mask or reschedule.

I have adapted to the new normal. I will be wearing a mask while I am working closely with clients indefinitely. It’s been really nice to not have a cold for 3 years :)

  • Can I bring my friend, my kid or my dog to my appointment?

The studio is an amazingly social place. I love visitors, and I love when my visitors bring visitors. However, I am very sensitive to the comfort level of my clients. Please give advanced notice if you are bringing an other with you- the client before or after you may want privacy.

  • My hair is falling out, can you help?

I can support you. Having had my own challenges, going to lots of specialized trainings, and working with so many other women with hair loss I’ve learned some tricks of the trade.

I always suggest starting with your medical doctor for diagnosis. They may refer you to specialists who can prescribe other options and advice about medicinal treatments, hair loss formulas and supplements.

What I offer is a soft place to land during the frustrating journey of exploring your options. I work with lots of folks with varying degrees and reasons for hair loss, and can work with what you’ve got to create a flattering look despite the hair loss.

  • Are all haircut appointments private?

I have designed my salon with only one stylist chair so that it is effortless to close the door and create an environment that is tailored to each clients requests.

  • What should I expect from the groups you offer?

In the groups I lead through my salon, members provide support for each other by sharing their experience, strength, and hope regarding alopecia, hair loss, trichotillomania and other hair related body-image issues. Each group is facilitated a little differently depending on the kind of hair loss and the collaboration of the members.

  • What is a support group?

Excellent question! This is a nuanced answer, but hopefully it will make sense. Usually in a support group, members share a common characteristic/issue and come together to find community. Support groups are a place to share coping strategies, relevant information about shared challenges, and a relief from the isolation and shame we feel as women with hair loss.

In the Moxie Parlour support group for women with hair loss- my intention is to explore:

General causes and common treatments for medically related hair loss.

Psycho-educational information (things like why we feel shame, and how it impacts every aspect of our daily lives, and tools to regulate our nervous system when we are activated by shame).

Community- coming out, learning to talk about and sharing our experience of hair loss and the impact it has had on our self esteem.

  • What is the difference between therapy and a support group?

Although I am a licensed psychotherapist, the groups I run at the salon are geared toward connection and sharing. The support at Moxie is therapeutic, but does not have the ongoing holding that some deeper work that often shows up in therapy might require.

I highly recommend that support group members also have a support system or individual therapist in the event that more containment and time is necessary for your healing.

Please see my website emilyhowardtherapy.com for more info on depth psychotherapy or ask me for a referral for a therapist to see in conjunction with this group.
